Joe Curren is the surfing equivalent of old growth, his style in the water and behind a lens is deeply rooted, contemplative and quietly powerful. Jair Bortoleto caught up with Joe to talk about family, travel, and shooting analogue in the digital age. Words: Jair Bortoleto Photos: Joe Curren

Meeting a legend is something few people have the opportunity to do. During a short stay in California last winter Dave Muir created his own luck in finding Skip Frye at home. He was welcomed in to take a look around. Words: Dave Muir Photos: Dave Muir and Skip Frye

Tucked away at the top of a hill near Gwenver beach in Cornwall, Skewjacks was the definitive 1970s surf camp. Three Words

June 04, 2010 | Words By:

three_words A surf film that documents the positive impact surfing has on lives. Filmed on the East coast of Scotland and the North East of England. A stark contrast to some of the perfect waves in surf films from around the globe, Three Words offers an insight into living and surfing around the area.

Director James Bligh offers his take on surfing waves in the North East of England from a very personal perspective. “I’m still learning things everyday, but couldn’t ignore the impact surfing has had on my life so far. It’s my first go at this sort of thing, the film and music are a sort of tribute to my experiences, people and waves so far, a snapshot of where I am at the moment…”

All the music was written and produced by James, recording on location in James’s van or some form of make shift shelter (with exception of the drums, there’s no way he could play a drum set in the van.)

All film recorded and edited by James Bligh.

  5. err sorry…..OK this is nicely…no, beautifully shot …but the surf content is sooo poor…he hasnt even scratched the surface of NE surfing. The swells are shitty summer crappy swells at the populer beaches coldy and longsands by the looks of it…why hasnt he put in the hard yards got to know a few decent locals and covered some proper NE waves?? sorry pal..get some winters under your belt!!

  6. Nice wee film but so so much better, bigger, gnarlier spots about, this is a bit like a Hawaiian surf movie concentrating solely on somewhere like Makapuu. Where is the footage of the winter sponge slabs, the locals who rip. Endless Summer III on newquay (lol) brown (barrels etc).

  7. cheers for the comments guys!

you will be able to buy the film soon, alongside the music check http://www.myspace.com/jamesblighmusic for details!

I agree with the lack of some of the quality waves up here in the film but I was working to a deadline and I just couldn’t wait for the winter to come round again…like I said, it’s a snapshot of the time I’ve had and I’d love to have those winter swells in but time just didn’t allow.

this winter will no doubt bring more chances to film and make more films like this, few of my mates up here will be ripping it to bits so I’ll be in the water getting it all, stay tuned!

    cheers!
    James.
